Know Before You Tow!

So you're thinking about getting a boat — but before you pull into the marina, you need to answer one critical question: can your truck actually handle the load?
Towing a boat isn't just about hooking up a trailer and hoping for the best. It's about knowing your truck's limits, understanding what your boat weighs, and making sure the two numbers work together. Here's a straightforward breakdown.
How Much Does a Boat Weigh?
Boat weight varies a lot depending on the type and size — and when it comes to towing, you're always looking at combined weight: boat + trailer + fuel + gear.
Here's a rough guide:
Small fishing boats and jon boats These are the lightest option. With the trailer included, most come in under 2,000 lbs. Almost any half-ton truck handles these without breaking a sweat.
Mid-size recreational boats Pontoon boats, bowriders, and deck boats in the 18–24 foot range typically land between 3,000 and 8,000 lbs combined. This is where your truck's tow rating starts to matter.
Large cabin cruisers and heavy-duty boats Bigger cabin cruisers, wakeboats with ballast, and sport cruisers can easily exceed 10,000 lbs. You'll want a properly rated truck — and potentially a 3/4-ton or 1-ton — before you even think about this category.
Know Your Truck's Tow Rating
Every truck has a maximum tow rating set by the manufacturer. This number is not a suggestion — it's an engineering limit. Exceeding it puts stress on your transmission, brakes, frame, and cooling system, and it creates a serious safety risk on the highway and especially going downhill.
To find your truck's tow rating, check the sticker inside the driver's door jamb, your owner's manual, or the manufacturer's towing guide for your specific year, trim, and engine configuration. Two trucks that look identical off the lot can have very different tow ratings depending on the package they came with.
The 80% rule is a good rule of thumb: try to keep your loaded trailer weight at or below 80% of your truck's maximum tow rating. It leaves room for safety and takes the strain off your drivetrain on long hauls.
What Else Affects Towing Capacity?
Beyond the numbers, a few other factors play into safe boat towing:
-
Wheelbase and stability — longer wheelbase trucks handle trailer sway better
-
Trailer brakes — required by law in Alberta for trailers over a certain weight, and a must-have for anything over 5,000 lbs
-
Weight distribution — proper tongue weight (typically 10–15% of total trailer weight) keeps the setup stable
-
Hitch rating — your hitch has its own rating independent of your truck; both need to match the load
